Profile

Prof. Javier LLorca graduated in Civil Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid in 1983. He got his Ph. D. in Materials Science at the same institution in 1986 and was appointed Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science in 1987 and Professor in 1995. Since 2007, he is director of the Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies in Materials and head of the research group on "Advanced Structural Materials and Nanomaterials" at the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

His current research interests - supported by an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council - are focused in the development of multiscale modeling strategies to carry out virtual design, virtual processing and virtual testing of structural materials for engineering applications, including the experimental validation at different length scales, so new materials can be designed, tested and optimized before they are actually manufactured in the laboratory.

Prof. LLorca, a Fulbright scholar, is a Fellow of the European Mechanics Society and member of the Academia Europaea. He is currently Guest Professor of Central South University (China) and has held visiting positions at Brown University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Indian Institute of Science. He has received numerous awards, including the Research Award from the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences, the Research award from the Polytechnic University of Madrid and the Gold Medal from the Spanish Structural Integrity Society. He is currently Associate Editor of Modelling and Simulation in Materials Science and Engineering, Composites Science and Technology, Materials Science and Engineering A, International Journal of Multiscale Computational Engineering, Integrating Materials and Manufacturing Innovation and International Journal of Engineering Sciences. He belongs to the European Solid Mechanics of Materials Conference Committees, to the Multiscale Modelling of Materials Conferences International Advisory Board, and to the External Advisory Panel, Institute of Materials (Georgia Tech).

In the framework of his research activities, he has participated in 43 research projects (21 as principal investigator) funded by competitive calls of the Spanish Regional and National programs on materials, European Research Council, European Union, US National Science Foundation, NATO, etc. as well as in 18 research contracts (10 as principal investigator) of technology transfer to industry funded by national and multinational companies (Airbus, ITP, Antolín, Gamesa, Abengoa, Inespal, Future Fibres, etc.). He has co-authored more than 200 research papers in international peer-reviewed journals, holds an h index of 44 from the Web of Knowledge.
