The research activities of the Department of Materials Science in the field of metallic materials are focused on the mechanical behavior of structural metallic materials under service conditions which produce damage process with losses of strength, toughness or ductility.
The phenomena which are studied by the group include the following:
Fracture at extreme temperatures (both low and high)
Mechanical behavior and fracture in aggressive environments
Fatigue and corrosion fatigue
Effect of residual stresses
Effect of weldments and stress concentrators.
The experience acquired with these activities has made possible the presence of members of this group in technical committees for the development of standards for the application of steels for building and construction in special service conditions.
